As each year comes to a close, I love the feeling of pride I feel as I think about all the successes and accomplishments had by my students throughout this school year. The flip-side to this feeling is the feeling of anxiety that I develop as I think about starting a new year with a new group of kids. It is daunting to begin the process all over again, starting at square one, re-establishing my classroom norms while developing new relationships with students. To top off that list, this year I am considering the ELA shifts (some of you are considering the mathematics shifts) required by the Common Core as I rethink my curriculum.
With our ventures into the Common Core this year, I am left wondering what next year will look like. What different skills in reading, writing, speaking, and language can I expect my students to arrive with as they enter the 8th grade? Even though I have become more familiar with the new standards expected at my grade-level, I have not spent much time looking at how 8th grade standards fit in with the grade levels around me. With this in mind I realized I needed a resource that could do just this, so I compiled the ELA standards for grades 5-9 into a single reference document. I this document at the ELA vertical team meeting today.
Since one tenant of the Common Core is that rigorous reading and writing is a shared responsibility of teachers across all content areas, I thought others might find this document helpful. In addition to the ELA middle level progression I created, I have also uploaded four other documents that show progression of skills from kindergarten to grade 12.
